Songket Restaurant: Food Review (KL The Guide)

Updated: Mar 12, 2020

Looking to try some authentic Malay cuisine? Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Songket Restaurant & Bar is an authentic Malay cuisine restaurant with a sophisticated twist. Providing a very traditional, “kampung” style atmosphere, you might even forget that you’re in the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur while dining in at Songket.

Why Songket?

1. Traveling back into time. Set in a traditional looking bungalow with intricate wood furnishings, and the implementation of songket (metallic hand-woven fabrics) into its overall architecture, it gives out a very traditional Malay House vibe. Especially with their newly installed gazebos towards the stage area. Customers can even dine in at the gazebos, placed outside the bungalow.

2. Traditional performances. Every night from 8:30pm-9:15pm, diners will get to enjoy live performances in the form of traditional dances from across Malaysia that goes on for about 45 minutes. These dances cover Malay, Indian, Chinese and indigenous style choreography - the bamboo dance from Sabah and Sarawak. Diners can even participate for several dances if they want to!

3. Its authentic Malay menu. Songket serves a wide range of the various Malay dishes. If you are a fan of spicy food- Songket is the place for you! Traditionally, Malay cuisine is generally more towards the spicy side with a tinge of sweetness here and there. The most used ingredients in Malay dishes are santan (coconut milk), lemongrass, belacan (shrimp paste), onions, garlic and chili peppers. And Songket undoubtedly offers these types of flavors in their dishes! Below are the suggested dishes to order for a group of 2-4 people:

Served as an appetizer, the Songket Platter consists of 4 starters; cucur udang (shrimp fritters) , popiah goreng (friend popiah), pegedil ayam (fried potato patties) and tauhu sumbat (stuffed tofu).

Consist of:

Tauhu Sumbat - pocket of fried bean curd stuffed with fresh mixed vegetables.

Chef’s Special Rice is a special light green coconut Basmathi rice with aromatic pandan leaf.

Price: RM8 4. If you’re looking for a venue to host group outings, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings or even corporate events. Songket is a highly recommended spot for a get-together with its spacious layout that can accommodate up to 300 people. For group outings, customers are given the flexibility to customize orders to their preferences. For this upcoming Ramadan month Songket will also be having a Ramadan Buffet as well as A’ la carte for buka puasa (breaking the fast). Prices range from RM80+ per head.

5. To treat yourself. The prices at Songket is definitely more towards the high side but the ambiance, food quality as well as the added live performances makes it worth the splurge. So if you’re looking to pamper yourself a little after a hectic week of work or just for the sake of it, Songket should definitely be on your list!
